Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church

903 Ann Street | 10 am - 4 pm

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Visitors will be enchanted with the colorful and beautiful details contained in every part of this church–the porch, the nave and the sanctuary. See the incredibly bold and ornate icon wall that separate the nave from the sanctuary. Learn why icons, and not statues, are venerated. Have a heaven on earth experience–the same sentiments that were relayed to Prince Vladimir of Rus when his emissaries worshiped in the Church of the Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople, when they were contemplating what religious faith to adopt.

ABOUT THIS BUILDING

The church is built on the estate of the late Nettie D. Stroud, located on the corner of 9th Avenue and Ann Street in Homestead, PA. On Nov. 16, 1936 a religious service was held and ground was broken for the new church. In January 1937 the church was ecclesiastically organized. By Nov. 14, 1937 a new parish home was completed, and in the meantime, work continued on the basement of the church. The cornerstone was laid by the eventual first Bishop of the American Carpatho-Russian Diocese, Rt. Rev. Administrator Orestes P. Chornock on November 25, 1937. The first Divine Liturgy was served in the new house of worship on February 26, 1938. Before work could be started on the upper portion of the church, the country was thrown into the Great Depression and then, World War II. Finally, with the signing of a $153,866 contract in 1949 with the Clement Martin Construction Company, work begin in earnest on Sept. 12, 1949. The parish gained new strength and conviction as the church arose, continuing to support its Rusyn community who had settled in and around Homestead. “The history of this church is written with a pen of love dipped in the wells of sacrifice and loyalty. It is a record of hopes and aspirations; struggles and adversities. A never ending faith and a militant love for Almighty God and His Orthodox Christian Church – that is the story of the Children of St. Nicholas Congregation.”
