ABOUT THIS BUILDING

This is the home of Capitan Abraham Hays. Settled in 1767 by Abraham & Fannie Hays, the family name became synonymous with coal mining, riverboats, among the other burgeoning industries of the period. The Hays family, after a flood in 1831 found a new location for their homestead. They moved up the hillside and began construction of Hays Mansion, which was completed sometime between 1840 and 1850. The Hays Mansion (now known as Harden Place) is the only remaining historic structure within the 17 boroughs of Mifflin Township. The Abraham Hays Foundation, Inc. has worked tirelessly over the past nine years to create interest in and affection for the history and heritage of the area. It is all centered on this historic mansion, creating a historic district that will bring local, regional, state and federal resources to rejuvenate this area of the Monongahela River Valley, given its proximity to historic sites. Both the Carrie Furnaces and Braddock’s Field are directly across the Monongahela River from the mansion.
